Readers go big for birthday of 'Stuart Little' writer

The Penobscot Marine Museum in Searsport invited visitors to enjoy an array of activities inspired by E.B. White's writing

SEARSPORT (NEWS CENTER Maine) -- Like his themes of friendship and bravery, the bond between E.B. White and his young readers defies the passage of time.

White split his time between the center of the publishing world in New York City and the bucolic quietude of Brooklin, Maine. He poured his observations of the animals at his country farmhouse into his beloved novel, "Charlotte's Web."

The Museum instead focused on another book to anchor its birthday celebration. Kids recreated a key scene from "Stuart Little" in which the titular mouse races a model boat by building a boat of their own as well as a figurine of Stuart.

Adding to the atmosphere was one of the museum's prize holdings. The dinghy, Faint Endeavor, which once belonged to White, was prominently displayed as a tangible connection to the neighbor they never met, but whose innermost thoughts they know so intimately.
