Brunswick Landing hosts dedication of Gold Star Families with first memorial marker in Maine

The Gold Star Families memorial marker is the first marker of its kind in the State of Maine.

BRUNSWICK (NEWS CENTER Maine) -- Senator Angus King and community members gathered at the P-3 park at Brunswick Landing to honor families of fallen soldiers with a Gold Star Families memorial marker.

The marker is the first of its kind in Maine, making it the 29th marker placed across the country.

Started by the National Gardens Clubs in 2015, the Gold Star Families memorial marker was created to focus on honoring families who have lost loved ones in the armed forces during periods of war or hostilities.

Peter Lavallee and his wife, Diane were one of two Gold Star families at the memorial. Peter's brother died while serving in the Vietnam war in 1967. Peter was amazed to see the community come together to honor them and says he just wished his parents could have been there.

"I wish my mom and dad could have been here. My mother would've especially, you know, really appreciated this."

There were two Gold Star families at the memorial that sat with Senator Angus King in the front row.
