CARIBOU (NEWS CENTER Maine) – Friends and family are set to gather at the United Methodist Church in Caribou to Friday morning to honor the life of a Maine icon, Don Collins.
Collins, the father of Maine Sen. Susan Collins, left a lasting impression on his hometown of Caribou, Aroostook County and the state.

He was a World War II veteran and recipient of two Purple Hearts. He also served as the Mayor of Caribou and a state legislator for years.
On top of his dedication to serving his community and his country, Collins was a family man. He and his wife Pat were married for 70 years.
Friends and family say he represented the values that Mainers hold dear: hard work, dedication and selflessness.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Collins was 92 years old.
