Gaming addiction declaration could help treatment, says Maine health expert

Pulling the kids away from their video games can seem impossible, but is it a sign of a disorder?

PORTLAND (NEWS CENTER Maine) -- People who compulsively play video games could soon be diagnosed with a disorder. The World Health Organization has officially added 'gaming disorder' to its international classification of diseases. That means doctors can diagnose and offer treatment to someone with the condition.

The WHO says the gaming disorder is characterized by an "impaired control over gaming," an "increasing priority given to gaming over other activities," and "the continuation or escalation of gaming despite the occurrence of negative consequences".

It's important to note the American Psychiatric Association has not recognized gaming addiction as a formal mental illness, though has proposed that it be studied further.

Now that video gaming addiction is classified as a disorder, Dr. Jeffrey Barkin says it could help treat those who are addicted.

"While the intention is not to stigmatize gamers, the goal is to provide help and treatment to those who are affected," he said. "Allows billing for treatment."

Meanwhile, kids and many adults enjoy playing video games. For some, it's about more than an escape from the daily grind. It's about giving back, or raising awareness for an important cause.

Just ask local gamer, Zeke Pendexter.

"There are a lot of streamers out there raising money and doing very good things by just playing video games," says Pendexter.

Pendexter grew up playing video games and says the gaming website, Twitch, will often help raise money for charitable causes.
