Kyra's Christmas Wish: 7-year-old raising money for community presents

Seven year old Kyra of Turner only wants one thing for Christmas; to make sure every child has a present under their tree Christmas morning.

TURNER (NEWS CENTER Maine) -- Seven year old Kyra of Turner loves everything about Christmas and this year she only wants one thing; to make sure every child has a present under their tree Christmas morning.

"I just feel bad when kids don't get presents on Christmas," Kyra said. "It makes me sad."

The second grader is very shy but her smile is infectious and her eyes light up when she talks about helping others. This is the second year she has asked for donations to help families who may not have the resources to provide their children with Christmas gifts.

"I want to have other kids wake up and open presents on Christmas," Kyra said. "I get to help other kids have Christmas."

Her goal is raise $200 dollars. She has a donation jar at the Cumberland Farms in Auburn and her mom Naomi created a Facebook page for people to donate to.

"I can't imagine children not opening presents on Christmas morning," her mom Naomi said. "Especially with the hype in school, the countdown to Christmas and then Christmas morning comes and they don't have anything."

The holidays are all about being together with family for Kyra and Naomi, they say that is their number one priority. However, Naomi says just because Christmas is about so much more than gifts, doesn't mean a child should go without.

She says she couldn't be more proud of her daughter for wanting to give gifts rather than receive them this holiday season.

"If she wants to buy presents for other kids so other kids are able to open things on Christmas morning than why not," Naomi said. "It's all she wanted for Christmas, so why not."

So far Kyra has at least three children she will be buying presents for, the more money she raises the more children she can surprise.
